Clever Betty, A History

Those of you who have been following along from the beginning know that I originally started Clever Betty on Etsy. At the time it was a place for me to sell my handmade products on the side while I also worked a full time job as a graphic designer. I worked for Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion magazine when the whole idea started with a college friend.

The magazine closed its doors for good in October 2008, like many businesses did that year, and I was left unemployed for a month until I started a brief position at a warehouse that oversaw the websites for artists like Mary Engelbreit, Jim Shore, and Debbie Mumm. It was during my time there that what might have been a partnership fizzled, and I started to develop Clever Betty into my own business.

I started sketching ideas for products. I took a few e-courses from business-y bloggers. (Crazily enough, one from someone who later became one of my professors at MICA.) I tossed out the idea to screen print my own fabric in Sean's basement and decided I'd give re-purposed fabrics a shot. I finally opened the shop in early 2010. Obviously I'm nothing if not a planner to have spent that much time prepping before even opening my doors!

I moved on from that warehouse job pretty quickly, but as much as I hate to admit, (let's just say it wouldn't make the top 10 list of favorite jobs I've had in my life...and I've had less than 10) I learned quite a bit about owning an e-commerce business during the short time I spent there. Of course I didn't really see that until after I moved on to working as a designer at a local university, where I stayed for 3 years.

About halfway through that stay I started to get really bored with my job, and realized that I was really enjoying coming home to work with my little Etsy shop. I did a few local craft shows. I got engaged and moved in with my fiance.

We had lots of discussions about the future of my business, and my career. I questioned being a graphic designer all together. I decided Clever Betty was worth continuing to pursue. And being the planner that I am, I knew I wouldn't be comfortable just diving into it full-time.

So I applied to grad school. I got accepted, and went to grad school while still working and planning a wedding. I reevaluated Clever Betty, and found myself drawn back to fabric design... only this time, I cut out the whole "printing it myself" step. (I have my designs printed digitally instead of screen printing by hand...they're very much like any quilting weight fabrics you would find in your local fabric store.) I developed Clever Betty as my future career throughout the program. I wrote a business plan. I earned a Master's degree in BAD. (Check the website if you don't believe me!) And I promptly quit my day job at the same time.

Follow all that? If not... here's a little visual timeline for you:

So here we are today, just a tiny bit past the "new shop opened" marker on the timeline. The business now has my full attention, and because of that, I found it appropriate to share how I got where I am to begin with. And I couldn't be more excited. The product line is developing, slowly but surely. There's already fabric and some handmade goods available, with plenty more to be added... and DIY options coming soon too! Have you checked it out?

SandL Getting Married: the Final Countdown

If you're curious about the post title see our "celebrity nickname" here. SandL = Sean and Lauren. Linking back to that post reminds me that I have to update you on my more than one-year-old nephew as well!

Two weeks before Sean and I got married we celebrated our upcoming nuptials with our bachelor and bachelorette parties. Sean and his friends stuck around downtown St. Louis, and my bridesmaids and I took advantage of the occasion with a road trip to Memphis, Tennessee.

We rented a minivan, which the girls decorated with cheesy (read: awesome) bachelorette party flags and magnets. By the time we got to Memphis I think there might have been one or two left... apparently they were not windproof. We arrived late, attempted to have a few drinks in our hotel room, and turned in for the evening to work up some energy for the following day.

Saturday morning we woke up and walked across the street to the Peabody Hotel for the morning duck march. It was impossible to get a good shot of the ducks themselves with the dim lighting, but I would definitely recommend the experience to anyone who has a chance to visit Memphis. The hotel is gorgeous. You can read the story of the ducks at the Peabody's website.

Below you can see us checking out the rooftop at the Peabody. They have an excellent view of downtown Memphis. Unless the sun is in your eyes like it obviously was for all of us in the photo. I swear we were having a good time. This photo just makes me laugh.

My Maid of Honor Emily and I with the Peabody Duckmaster:

After the duck march we rounded another corner to hit up Rendezvous for some world famous Memphis BBQ. I'm honestly more of a KC Masterpiece kind of girl, but it was worth the experience and was quite tasty in its own way.

And what's a trip to Memphis without a stop at Graceland!?! Yep. I know you're thinking, "Are you sure this was for your bachelorette party?" But this is just how my crowd rolls. Minivan, ducks, BBQ and Elvis.

I'm pretty sad Anna isn't in the pic below (she was taking it) because it's one of my faves from the trip. Gotta love a little instant photo moment here and there, and reminds me that I need to bring my own instant camera with more often! Look at us... audio tour lanyards and all. I swear this really was my bachelorette party.

Of course, after we hit a couple of Elvis themed souvenir stores we headed back to the hotel to get ready to hit the town. So yes, here's where the traditional "bachelorette party" started. On Beale Street. And for some reason I just don't have a ton of photos from that point on that I'm willing to share on the internet. But here's a few:

My bridesmaids Becky, Crista, Emily and Anna and I on Beale Street.

Evidence of a good time: Rhinestone encrusted bride chalice, sparkly bachelorette tiara, party veil, everyone in matching beaded necklaces, airbrushed TCB tattoo. Which I tried to convince Sean (by text) was something permanent and would "look beautiful in my wedding dress!" He didn't buy my story. Guess he knows me pretty well.

And in case you were wondering, yes... those are extensions. I was lucky enough to have a trial hair and makeup session the day we left for Memphis and thought our trip would be an excellent time to test them out. They're clip-ins- I have very fine, thin hair and wanted to add some bulk for my bridal updo. Admittedly, I'm not as great at putting them in or styling them as my stylist is! Below you can see a giant bucket of Hurricane at Silky O'Sullivan's and an extra classy "diamond" ring that flashed a bright pink light.

We also visited Coyote Ugly while on Beale Street, which was my personal favorite. Though honestly a bit trashy overall, it was a fun experience. I may have been a bit obsessed with the movie Coyote Ugly in late middle/early high school, so there was no way I was missing out on going to one of the actual bars. They don't actually spray you if you ask for water at the bar, by the way :)

We made a few other stops: Wet Willie's (which reminded us Mizzou grads of Trops, but more expensive), a restaurant that I can't recall the name of, but where I had fried alligator for dinner, and finally, Club 152, where we rounded out the night with one heck of a dance party. The next morning we packed up our minivan and headed back to St. Louis, 13 days from our wedding day.

----------

I wish I had more digital photos of our rehearsal dinner, but my usual photographer (Sean) was a bit pre-occupied that night! I do have some printed photos in a scrapbook my mom made me, so I'm happy the night was documented. And behold! My tiny, two month old nephew makes his first appearance on the blog, argyle sweater vest and all. He's 14 months old as I type!

You can also see my rehearsal outfit: dress and sweater from H & M, white lace shoulder applique and belt borrowed from my mom's wedding gown. I chopped her gown (my parents married in the long-sleeved/high-necked/polyester 70's) to pieces trying to come up with something to make for the rehearsal dinner and I was so happy when I landed on this. I thought I'd go with a short white dress, but in the end decided I wanted something more useful for the future since I was using such meaningful materials. I still wear this sweater all the time!

The night basically went like this: I forgot my dress at home so Sean had to bring it to me at my hotel room before heading to the rehearsal itself. I freaked out trying to organize everyone (worried that the wedding day would be the same), and we did a brief run through of the ceremony where our officiant pronounced Sean's name "Sheen".

We headed to Wild Horse Grill for a delicious meal hosted by my in-laws as many of our guests tried to stay up-to-date on that evening's Cardinal's game (I'm assuming you know how that whole thing ended up, right?) After spending some time with family, our wedding party, and some delicious food, we handed out gifts and I was finally able to calm down. Thankfully, I got it all out during rehearsal night!

Stay tuned next for my biggest wedding DIY: our invitations.

Summer Showers, Part 2

I'm switching gears a bit for this post to talk about a baby shower I co-hosted, instead of being the guest (bride) of honor, with my mother-in-law Karen for my sister-in-law Mary in July.

Karen came up with the wonderful idea of a "cute as a button" theme and we built everything around that idea from invitations, to food, to decor, to activities. Below you can see the invitation I designed and crafted. The blue polka dot is scrapbook paper, the brown is fabric cut with pinking shears, and the "E" button at the top is polymer clay sewn with embroidery thread. The frame next to the invite is how Derek and Mary announced to the family at Christmas that they were expecting- Grandma and Grandpa each got a frame picturing the same message.

The guest of honor arrived with her husband, who stuck around to hang out with the boys, handle parking outside, and of course pack the gifts for the ride home!

Mary, Karen and I. I was having a horrible hair day, unfortunately... which I'll always blame on Missouri weather. Mary, of course, looked gorgeous!

Our first task was a fun activity for the guests to participate in. We had onesies, fabric, cutout shapes to trace, and permanent iron on glue sheets so each guest could create a custom onesie for the new baby. After they finished, we took an instant photo of the guest with their onesie and pasted it to a page of fill in the blank wishes for the baby. The blue album in the photo below was where we compiled all of the wish pages and photos. Mary says she loves having such a detailed memory of who created which onesie, and of course all of the thoughtful hopes and dreams for the baby boy the guests left on their wish pages.

Derek and I even got in on the fun!

Karen decorated with lines of clothes-pinned onesies, bibs and socks, and even made the adorable arrangement of flowers accented with button centers and wrapped in receiving blankets seen below. We provided snack foods: chicken salad, fruit, cucumber sandwiches, and button cookies, for guests to refuel after making them get crafty. Mary opened tons of wonderful gifts, and we gave out button frames as favors to thank the guests.

The end of the shower was commenced with a belly contest... between Mary, and Darryl... our father in law! It was all in good fun of course- I just love their smiles in this photo. The winner of said contest is still up for debate :)

I had such a fun time planning this shower for Mary, and collaborating with Karen to do so. It was really neat to see the guests create the onesies and think about what they wished for his future before even meeting him. Derek and Mary walked away with so many thoughtful and much needed gifts. I can't help but look back at these photos and remember how much love filled Karen and Darryl's home that day in anticipation of meeting the newest member of our family. Obviously I have much updating to do on the little guy since last July... but up next, there's still one more shower to recap!

Happy Birthday To Me

Last Sunday was my 25th birthday. We celebrated by heading to Maifest in Hermann, MO, which I've talked about before in reference to Oktoberfest, but have somehow never actually posted a recap about it. I'm sure you can imagine why... Anyway, it's been a tradition to go to Oktoberfest and Maifest since I've been of legal age to do so. That really hasn't been that long in the grand scheme of things, but I can definitely say that Hermann is one of my favorite places to visit.

Near Hermanhoff winery on our way to Tin Mill Brewery

Grape vines at Stone Hill

This is what Sean would look like if he actually drank that giant glass of wine and wore liederhosen

First of all, I must say that I can't believe the amount of time we were there. Hermann is a little over an hour away from where we live in St. Louis. We left at 10:30 am. We got back right around 11:30 PM. 11:30 PM! Second, I have to thank all of the people who were there, and especially those who stuck it out for the entire day to celebrate. It was such a fun time, and though I tend to not like being the center of attention, everyone made me feel quite loved on my 25th.

Most of the gang that came... somebody was looking ready to go home (that's our best man, Brett)

Me, Emily and Crista (maid of honor and bridesmaid) at Tin Mill Brewery

We went to a few wineries, ate a ton of cheese, crackers and cookies, hit up one brewery, had our fill of bratwurst and German potato salad, as if that wasn't enough, headed to the bier deck in Washington, MO on our way back for a little more celebrating and a ton of appetizers. (Sean's cousin's own John G's!)

Crista and I both decided to wear yellow dresses for the day. I have no idea what's going on in this photo but I thought it was funny.

I finally got a photo of Mary's baby bump! Me with my (soon to be) sister in law and cousin in law Monica.

What a perfect way to celebrate a quarter of a century :)
