High Five for Friday 4.5.13

Hello! Happy Friday again. Here's my high five:

1. We went to a fish fry with our friends and their son, Henry. He is such a content baby, and always fun to play with.

2. Last weekend we celebrated my college roommate at her bachelorette party. She's getting married 4.13! We had a great time... and even better, I was home by 9:30pm. Short, sweet and to the point.

3. This guy was in a cuddly mood all week. He also managed to get a ton of hair on that chair... it's a daily battle, but the kitty love makes it manageable.

4. I'm back to better eating habits this week, after a need for comfort food when Lily died, and a very indulgent Easter. I've yet to mention I've lost 13 lbs in the past 9 weeks so I'll get to that post soon... but I will say now that I'm thrilled I somehow managed to maintain that loss during some not-as-great weeks with meals!

5. I became a Roost Tribe member last month, and I can't imagine having better timing! Bonnie recently added a ton of new features to it, including a Facebook group. One day in I'm already finding out just how awesome it is to have such a community at my fingertips.

Bonus: I took a week off blogging, as you may have noticed. It was refreshing! I spend the extra time working on the most specific and realistic plan I've come up with yet for getting more products in the shop... and reorganized some things that are already there while I was at it.

High five, friends!

'Round the Shop

Hi there! I just wanted to stop in and make note of a few things going on in the shop. First, you might have noticed that the fabric department is looking a bit barren these days. Don't worry though, it will be full again soon! I'm switching things up a bit with pricing and batching, and will be adding some new prints over the next few months. So sit tight on that one!

Otherwise, I'd like to point out that I still have a few tea towel calendars on hand, and they are now 50% off. Snatch 'em up now while they're at their best price yet! Keep in mind that even though we're nearing the fourth month of 2013, you can still use the calendars after the year is over as actual towels in your kitchen. They're a lovely linen/cotton blend that only gets softer with time.

Next, you might notice that things are a bit hodge-podge in the handmade department. I've struggled over the past few months with narrowing down what exactly it is that I want to make to sell in my shop. Just because I can make just about anything doesn't mean I should sell everything! I've always loved making purses, bags, and accessories. But as my friends and family experience lots of life changes like weddings and babies, my mind wanders to things I want to make for them as gifts, and then of course, what I can turn into products. So I think I've finally narrowed down a logical product line that encompasses ladies and babies... accessory style. So look forward to new handmade products being added regularly.

Finally, things are starting to pick up in the DIY department. If you head on over there now you'll see my very first non-seasonal pattern available as a digital download. I plan to add many, many more of these patterns for a variety of items so you can sew along with me. Putting patterns online is not a quick or simple process, and it's a bit nerve-wracking as far as intellectual property goes... but you never know what will come of something if you're not willing to put your work out there!

Thanks for reading my shop announcements and being patient as I pull everything together. I'll be back on Friday with some High Fives for the week.

Organizing Tutorials

Hi there, just a quick note to share the most recent Clever Betty site update. If you're searching for craft and sewing tutorials, you can now view them by category on the tutorials page. There's a link in the right column of this blog as you see circled in the screen shot below:

and if you're browsing from the shop, the link is just under the logo at the top of the page, which you can see in the screenshot below.

Every time I add a tutorial, I'll add it to the collection so it's really easy for you to find! Stay tuned this Wednesday for the next crafty tutorial.

And P.S.... there's just a few of those 2013 calendars left in the shop, and they're 30% off right now...

Status Update

I used to do a column called "What I Learned" where I talked about things I'd been doing that week. I've been thinking back about how it was a really great way to share what's going on in my life in a quick and simple manner. But I want to switch it up a bit.

If you follow me on Twitter you might notice that I'm pretty bad about tweeting. It's the one social media platform that I have a hard time keeping up with! But I do enjoy the idea of condensing ones thoughts to 140 characters or less. That, and I love the fact that my husband does not get the concept of hashtags, which makes me want to over-emphasize the trend to tease him. #oldmantrappedina30somethingsbody

Now, blogger doesn't have an easy word count feature that I know of so I'm not going to take the time to count each character, but each week I plan to post my "status updates" in a quick and dirty format on my blog. That way you don't have to hit up every last social media platform to find me either, it's all in one place! So here we go... this has been the final week of January for me:

Always be sure to agree to terms ahead of time, no matter what you're working on. Otherwise you might end up with an unexpected $200 bill. #mycheckbookiscryingtoo

Discovered that our weather radio has an "iceberg warning" option this week. #nowIwannawatchTitanic

Pinterest is not a source. It's a search engine. Pinterest did not create the projects you see there; real, hardworking people did.  Pleeeaaaase be sure to link back to the original sources! #linkwithlove

Have we really gotten to the point where I'm getting dirty looks at stores for wanting a paper copy of my receipt? #dontmesswithmybookkeeping

I have single handedly consumed more than a dozen eggs in less than a week. Hard boiled for breakfast, quiche and fritatta for dinner, and leftovers.... mmmmm mmm. #frommyheaddowntomylegs

*I just noticed that the sell by date on this carton says December 8. No worries if you noticed too... we get fresh eggs from one of Sean's coworkers that has chickens, and she just reuses old cartons to deliver them to us.

Today I heard a news anchor say something about getting schwag if you attend the local event she was promoting... More commonly known as SWAG. Stuff We All Get. Schwag is something completely different... #Iguessitslegalinsomestates

Finding little nibble marks in office supplies that once sat in our old basement for months makes me both sigh and smile at the same time. #sincewhendocatschew

Have a wonderful weekend!

On Routine

Did you know that the longer you put off blogging the harder it is to blog? Like many, many other things in this world, routine is key. Like changing your sleep, exercise, or eating habits. You have to take the time to get into a routine to see the results you're after.

So why have I been putting off blogging? Well, lots of reasons. I feel boring, certain things don't go as I expect them to, sometimes I feel like I'm talking to myself, it's a lot of work to put together each post, what I'm posting isn't perfect yet, there are so many stinking things on my to do list I don't often know where to start, and so I don't start anything at all. But lack of routine is probably the biggest theme to explain the whole issue.

So let me start from the beginning. See, I have this thing about not showing weakness. That when someone tells me something is "Haaaaaaaard," it always seems like they're whining, or just plain weak. Life is hard. Why talk about it?

Well, why not talk about it? I'm going to talk about it. I've had a much harder time getting used to working from home than I expected. There. I said it. It has been hard for me.

Before quitting my day job, even though I loathed it, I had a routine. Wake up, shower, drive 40+ minutes to work. Eat oatmeal and drink tea while checking email and blogs. Get to work. Lunch. More work. Drive 40+ minutes home. Workout. Dinner. Class. Tv. Bed. Repeat. I didn't particularly enjoy that routine, but it got me through my days, and I felt productive because of it. I never fully realized how much of a role productivity plays in my sanity/happiness/mental state/satisfaction until I started working from home.

With working from home also comes the difficulty of separating ones personal and professional lives. For me, that's even harder when a lot of my personal projects overlap with my professional skills: sewing a gift for someone, designing a friend's wedding invitations, DIYing home decor. Also, there's making the decision to set aside time to do the household tasks so there's also time to do the business tasks. And learning how to get out of my own head, because there's no one else for me to talk to (except my pets) for 8+ hours each weekday.

So why, after six months, have I not been able to come up with a routine to feel that satisfaction from being productive? I don't know. That's just me. Freedom is easy. It took me a while to figure out what my issue was to begin with. I've had the luxury of being able to take my time to figure things out. And I'm not apologizing for it. I'm just finally getting comfortable with it myself.

So lets cut to the chase. I know I'm not the only one in this boat right now, especially if you subtract the whole blogging/running a business theme. I've been collecting inspiring posts from other bloggers this January in the time that I've not been spending blogging myself. There's something great about the beginning of a new year that brings feelings of the need opportunity to change, improve, grow. So I'd love to share these posts with you, and hopefully (if you're able to take the time to read some or all of them!) you'll get the idea.

What is your routine like? What makes you feel productive or satisfied, or are the one in the same?

I wish you could see how this post came together. I started it in early January and keep coming back to add and subtract... thinking "I'll go back and organize that into logical thought later." I promise that my idea of a good routine includes more frequent blog updates!

Whoops!

This is what happens when you leave your Fabri-Tac glue on its side with a faulty cap:

That glue had been there long enough to solidify into a permanent glue-sicle by the time I noticed it. Mental note: put the Fabri-Tac in it's rightful place on top of the craft supplies... in an upright position.

Snow Day Number 2! And Some Changes.

Happy Snow Day to me! The weather must have known I'd be celebrating the one year anniversary of the opening of my shop. In an effort to keep from getting cabin fever, and since it's the first of February, I thought it would be the perfect time to share some upcoming changes to You Had Me At Handmade with you.

One year later, I feel like my little shop has become pretty successful. I have my ups and downs when I'm busy with the rest of my life, but the plan is to keep on truckin'. One way that I'm going to do so is through my blog. I'm bringing back weekly columns! I do love writing about myself, but this blog is called You Had Me at Handmade... so we're gonna switch things up a bit to put more emphasis on the handmade. Here's the lineup that you can expect to see on a regular basis:

Featured artists. I used to do this with my "Found in the Forums" posts, but I found it to be limiting, so I'm opening it up to all artists. Not just Etsians... but any artist who has a web presence. I'm excited to share who I find with you!

Weekly Obsessions. I'm going to share a weekly collage of things I just can't get out of my mind, and think you'll enjoy too! This will of course be heavy on the handmade, but you can count on fashion, interior design, graphic design and other pretty stuff too. I recently joined Pinterest, so I'm hoping that will be a great tool to help with this column.

What I learned. I've done a few of these posts in the past and have received a really good response to them. I think it will be a great way to keep you updated with what I'm up to on a weekly basis- from work, to fun, to Clever Betty, and everything in between!

Sunday Snapshot. I fell way behind on this column so I stopped doing it all together... but the truth is, I miss it! It's a fun way for me to share my experiences with you, past and present, in visual form. So don't worry, you'll still see plenty of posts about myself, Sean, wedding planning, etc... just in a more organized way.

Monthly tutorials. I've had an overwhelming number of requests to start doing regular DIY tutorials. While I'd like to do more, I'm going to start with one per month. You can count accessories, Adobe Creative Suite knowledge, gifts, and maybe even a few involving my dressform.... so stay tuned!

I'm excited about all of these new (and returning) adventures on You Had Me at Handmade... and I hope you are too! It's about time I catch up, right? But what better way to celebrate my one year Etsyversary than with a fresh start to the blog! I'm also going to be working on the structure and design, so if you would please pardon the dust over the next few weeks, I promise I'll get everything in order and looking good again in no time.

Let me know what you think! Are there any people you want me to write about? Any particular kinds of tutorials? I love hearing your feedback, so leave a comment or contact me at cleverbettycraft@gmail.com.

A Weight off My Shoulders

I have to share something with you guys. This used to be something that I would see on a daily basis (if not more frequently):

Not the fact that I have zero updates in my Reader. It's actually kind of a miracle that I was able to capture this image after having read every last update on all of the blogs I follow. What I'm trying to show you is the crazy amount of wedding blogs that exist here. Note that the list keeps scrolling and I couldn't fit them all into one image.

This is what I see as of today:

Note: no scroll bar, and six organized folders where there were once seven... yup. I got rid of the wedding blogs. Truth is, I started looking at wedding blogs long before I was engaged, and we got engaged over 8 months ago. After that long I've collected enough inspiration to fit into a three ring binder... and that's all I need at this point.

To those of you who might own one of those blogs, never fear, as I've saved you in my bookmarks in case of an emergency! But for now, I've got to move on as I plan my own wedding. So as I cut myself off from wedding inspiration, I'll move into a new phase of wedding planning, which is how do I apply all of this inspiration to make it into our day? I love looking at weddings, and I know I always will. But I don't want to have all of those other brides' weddings. I want to have mine and Sean's. So farewell to you, Google Reader Weddings Folder... perhaps we will meet again after 10.15.11.

Happy Friday, everyone!

House Tour

Ok so it's really just our living room/dining room and a bit of the master bedroom, but I finally got around to taking photos of the redecorating that's been in progress since I moved in August. Believe me... you wouldn't want to see what my studio space looks like right now... and there's not a whole lot else to look at in our house aside from that and the bathroom.

There is also a room that we like to call the "office," but it usually ends up being the place we dump everything we don't want to look at while we're lounging on the couch. It currently houses a treadmill, my computer, my closet (as the master bedroom closet is barely big enough for Sean's clothes,) and a 5 gallon bucket of fermenting beer.

Please don't hesitate to tell me if I smell a bit hoppy the next time you see me; this is a new experiment in our household, and there aren't many rooms to choose from to leave said 5 gallon bucket in for two weeks other than the same room that also houses my entire wardrobe. I'll post photos of the above mentioned spaces someday when they're clean. Moving on... you can click on photos to make them larger :)

The above photos are what you would see when you walk through the front door. I built a mock-sofa table out of 2 x 6's and covered it with fabric. Most of the stuff on the shelf came from my past apartments- the vase, the bottle next to it, both bird candle holders (handmade ceramic I found at a thrift store,) the wood box, metal star, and the candle base at the right. I bought candles to coordinate with the room's color scheme, and the floofy thing coming out of the vase is from Hobby Lobby. It's some kind of fake berry that I'm certain would never be that color in nature, but it also worked with the color scheme. The ampersand was purchased for our engagement session, and the poster is from the Missouri History Museum. A friend of mine has the same poster (it's a 1904 World's Fair advertisement) in her bedroom, and I lust after it every time I'm there. Lust no more! I have my own :) Pillows were purchased at Pier One at a super crazy sale, throw is from Home Goods, and lampshades are from Target. Each pillow is different, one's silk, one's embroidered velvet, one's a chevron print and the last is plain velvet. For three reasons: 1. I couldn't decide between these four and 2. I like being eclectic, and 3. It works. Couch, end tables, lamp bases, coffee table and recliner were Sean's existing furniture. Too bad I forgot to turn that digital photo frame on before taking these pics :) Did you spot Nelson in the above photos, by the way?

Well if you didn't, you can see a different cat in the above photo. It's kind of a miracle that Greta is A. in this photo at all and B. looking directly at the camera. Not many people have been lucky enough to spot this lady. White rug courtesy of my parents old bedroom carpet, which they had bound after getting hardwood in their bedroom. It's thick and shaggy and I love it. And oh, hi there Lisa Hessel Photography so conveniently gracing our coffee table! I had books made of our engagement photos for us and for parents/grandmas as Christmas gifts at Picaboo. I was impressed by their quality and think you would be too.

This is the corner behind our front door. Drapes are from Pier One, and were on a bit of a sale, but not enough so I only bought one and cut it into four panels to fit the two windows in this room. We never close them anyway since there are nice wooden blinds on the windows, so it all worked out well. I got this chair from my maid of honor who no longer had room for it in her old apartment, and I recovered it with upholstery fabric from Hancock Fabrics to coordinate with this room. The pillow is from Target... and it's apparently still available since I saw that this lady recently purchased the same one! The chest is an heirloom from Sean's family. I believe it was painted gold or something at one point, and Sean's mom stripped it to it's original awesomeness. It's full of stuff from Sean's childhood and I love every last bit of it. Photos above the chest were originally above our couch and included a few more frames, but we took the rest into the master bedroom. The one on the left was captured by Sean. I still can't decide whether that little shelf is fun or a total nuisance, but it was there when Sean moved in two years ago and it will remain when we move out.

Above is our kitchen table, which Sean already had. I added a giant lace doily that my mom brought me from their European river cruise, a mirror from Big Lots, and a couple of little white vases from Pier One that I had in my last apartment. The giant fake flowers are again probably not natural looking, but Hobby Lobby has a great selection of such things for people like me who just want their colors to coordinate. On the wall behind the table you'll see shelves with family photos and a few knick knacks here and there. I made the teacup candle... it's a vintage teacup with peppermint scented wax. I made a couple for Christmas gifts and just couldn't give this particular teacup up!

Across from the kitchen table, one of our many bookshelves. It holds most of our cookbooks (that doorway on the right is the kitchen) and various books we've recently read. The second shelf is full of wedding planning details (I've condensed it all to one binder now!) and a mail/bill organizer. I'm working on a collection of wine corks in the glass Oberweis bottle that lives on the second shelf from the bottom. Sean put a hook on the left side for me to hang my purse on when I get home because I'm ridiculous and insist that the kitchen table not be cluttered with stuff other than decor and food.  Take a left at the doorway...

and you'll find your way to the master bedroom. Pillows above were purchased during an Ikea shopping spree when we went to Chicago to try on wedding dresses. They were one of the first purchases I brought home to Sean (whose opinion I always ask for when decorating our home) and my reasoning to him was something like, "See, they're girly and manly. Embroidered flowers on one side, blue and brown plaid on the other!" He went for it.

I brought over a dresser and a side table from my last apartment. We had to paint the one above, as I had painted it a much brighter blue after finding it at an antique store, and it just did not work in this room. Sean took a few tips from his mom with paint stripping and we went with a much softer blue. We kept the drawer pulls I had installed a few years ago, and it was good as new! The bird artwork in the back left is from Burlington Coat Factory, believe it or not, and I gave it a distressed white wash to make it more interesting. The little piece of art with the couple's feet ice skating is a Valentine's Day gift I drew and gave to Sean last year, as a nod to our first Valentine's Day together and the evening we spent at Steinberg freezing our buns off. I'm still working on this area, as I'd love to find the perfect gold trimmed mirror to put above the dresser and move most of the stuff that's currently there elsewhere.

This is the other dresser I brought with. I got both of them for less than $100 when I first moved to St. Louis, including delivery. You bet I wasn't about to give that kind of a deal up when I moved here... but Sean is probably ready for them to be a part of the guest room furniture in whatever home we move to next, as the drawers don't function as easily as he would hope (and all of his clothes are in this room!) The lamp if from Target. So what's that chain you see peeking out of the corner of the blue dresser photo?

It's the countdown chain! It's hanging around the entirety of the master bedroom and was, amazingly, the perfect fit to go around once when I first installed it. We've been taking down the links as the days count down to...

(Sorry that's not the best photo; the last link is in a pretty dark space in this room! I did manage to take all of these on my own without the help of my photographer Sean this time around :) So that's what I've been keeping under wraps for oh, 5 months now? I hope to be able to show you the rest of our home before we decide to move out, but I'll keep you posted! What's your favorite part? Do you take as long to decorate your home as I do?

Snow Day

The last time I had a snow day was during my first two weeks of work at the MEHC magazine back in '08. We had two and a half days off in that span. Not too shabby if you ask me. I had one snow day in all the days I spent at Mizzou. Funnily enough, it seemed like a good majority of students still made it to campus to have a snowball fight on the quad. What's a one mile walk (for me) In 12" snow when you get to play instead of work?

I got a text message from my boss at 4 this morning saying "snow day! don't come to work!" I shouted out a "Yippee!" just as Sean started to tell me of the potential issues the weather would cause his workday. Thankfully he made it there and back safe, and is finishing his workday from home.

Truth is, I'm honestly not really a fan of snow anymore. I dislike being cold. It ruins birthday plans for friends. (important 30th birthdays at that!)

But today. Today I like snow. It provided an extra two hours of sleep this morning. It allowed me to eat lunch with my fiance in the comfort of our own home, while watching an episode of season 3 of Dexter. It's given me tons of time to work on wedding planning details that I'm behind on. It gave me a little sigh of relief, and some time to relax. So thanks, snow, and Chancellor of the university that I work at, for providing me with all of the above.

The month I disappeared... part one

I know you're all dying to know why in the world I didn't blog one time during the month of August. So I'm going to do a little recap to show you what I was up to during that time! Primarily... this is what was on my plate:

Moving Casa de Laurenzo. This was the first and only apartment I ever lived in by myself. Sometimes I miss it... and then I remember that I have a dishwasher now and I get over that.

Oh, and there's the security of Sean always being around. I'm really not the kind of person who wants to be alone very often, so there's another thing that makes me happy about Sean :)

That's Nelson in the office. He's a bit of a ham... if it were up to him, he'd be in every one of these pictures. Fortunately, Sean, Nelson and Greta get along great, so they're also enjoying their new home. I never managed to get any photos of the bedroom, which is unfortunate, because it had the best light you could ever imagine, especially for being in an apartment that you could reach out the window and hold hands with your neighbor if you wanted to.

All empty and clean... so very, very clean. It's really amazing to me how much cats can shed.

This is the only thing I left behind. My front door is to the top left of the photo, and this is coming down the stairs (it was a 4 family flat, 2 up, 2 down) The first time my parents came to visit after I moved in was for Easter in 2008. My dad saw the dust that had settled on this ledge and wrote his name in with his finger. I think the fingerprints were from a friend that didn't realize there was dust there and tried to swing down the stairs. I never had the heart to clean it because it made me smile every time I left my apartment.

I love where I live now even more, but after 2 and a half years, I definitely miss bits and pieces of my first apartment. But definitely not the lack of a dishwasher and central air. Nope, I'm totally over that part.

Brainstorming

I've had a chance to brainstorm some ideas lately for new bag designs and ways to get CB out there. This has made me decide that I need to be more organized about this whole blog thing. I've started scheduling posts, but I want to add more interesting content. (Turns out I do actually get sick of talking about myself sometimes :)

Remember my issues with the Etsy forums that I mentioned here? Well, I'd like to turn that into a positive thing. The thing is, I have a hard time staying away from the forums, even after such an event. And while it's not exactly helping me gain customers, I do really enjoy helping other sellers figure out the site and come up with business solutions. It's nice to have a community of people that are doing the same thing I am- regardless of whether some of the are total meanies or not.

So here's the solution, folks. Every Friday, I'm going to feature an Etsy seller that I've met in the forums.  It's Found in the Forums Friday!

Today, things are a bit different with our first seller. She actually found me in the forums after I posted on a seller's question about sending graphic design files to customers. Turns out, she's also from St. Louis, and after clicking on my shop, she sent me a kind note to say hello and point out our common interests and careers. It's crazy how you can run into someone in such a huge place (the internet) and find out that they're much closer than you had ever imagined! Without further ado, I'd like to introduce you all to Jess from Magpie Paperworks.

The first thing I noticed about Jess's shop was her logo. I melted. It's gorgeous! It's one of those give-me-more-right-now kind of logos. (this might not make sense if you're not a designer...but just trust me. It's good.)

Jess says, "it was a team effort between myself & a lovely, uber-talented illustrator in Southern California, Brigette Barrager. Brigette brought the sweet magpie to life & I created the flourished border and set the off-register type. I spent months designing and tweaking the logo -- working for yourself is truly the hardest thing! It was important to me to have a logo that really expressed the Magpie Paper Works brand - a little bit vintage with a whimsical, modern twist."

So onto Jess' work. She has a little bit of a background as a photographer, which obviously shows in her Etsy shop. In the photo above, you can see the Faux Bois Orchard invitation suite.

"I created all of my suites for brides who may be dreaming about bespoke invitations but feel that custom work is out of their budget. Each pre-designed set features original concepts & illustrations as well as unusual high-end papers that I source directly from the manufacturer. The invites can be personalized with the bride and groom's details but because they are pre-designed, there are no custom fees involved. Cute and affordable!" Below is the Fiesta invitation suite.

I really love every aspect of Jess' work- the typography is phenomenal, her color choices make sense and the presentation is to die for. She's even inventive with the copy! I'd definitely recommend her to any bride who is in the planning process right now. Not only does she do amazing work, but she's quite personable; our Etsy convos have become something that I look forward to seeing in my inbox.

But the good news doesn't stop there. Jess also sells a number of giclee art prints. Her clever sense of humor shines through in these lovely 8x10 works of art.

I hope you'll visit her shop to see the rest of what Magpie Paperworks offers. You can also follow her blog for Magpie updates (another very sexy design if you ask me!) Thanks, Jess, for being the very first seller featured in Found in the Forums Friday!

Check back during the next week for two more new columns, and a surprise for the shop!

Things I've Learned This Week

1. Don't expect to get people in the Etsy forums to have a civil conversation about not biting the hand that feeds you. (eg, "Etsy SUCKS!" because they're making changes to improve the site. "You're messing with my sole source of income!") My argument was this: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Your business is your responsibility- if something isn't working the way you want, come up with new ideas so that it does! People are cruel when it comes to internet chat- to the point where they start berating you as a seller and as a person. Lesson learned: stay away from the forums unless I have a question; it's not gaining me any business to be there anyway.

2. Department store makeup is most definitely not always better. I've started using a new round of acne meds recently, which means my latest makeup routine no longer works the same way. So I tried multiple brands at Sephora. I tried Macy's. I tried Laura Mercier at Nordstrom. Mostly because I'd heard good things about all of them, on, you guessed it, the internet. Good thing those places give out samples, or I'd have spent a fortune on all of the different stuff that failed. I've found my miracle makeup at none other than Target, folks. Revlon Color Stay. Good stuff, especially for oily skin. Under $10. Problem solved.

3. Even if people are in PR positions, it doesn't mean they've got it together. You would think that a "middleman" would know that you have to give your designer all of the photos and all of the logos necessary for a concert poster UP FRONT. But they don't. And they could care less about all of the time you spent (wasted) making two rounds of posters before they eventually provided said photos and logos.

4. The Dreaded Killer Jellyfish of Graphic Design Favors has powers much like Richard from LOST. No one knows how... but it will never age, and can never die.

5. Cats are actually smart enough to know that they can't jump from a second story balcony. And they're much happier now that they get to enjoy the outdoors a bit, after 2 and a half years of being cooped up inside a tiny city apartment.

6. I eat way to many carbs. In fact, I really wouldn't doubt that it's close to 90% of my diet. This was fine when I was a teenager and swam 20 + miles a week, but now that I've been sitting on my butt at a desk for years, it's about time I switched that up a bit so I can have a bit of energy left when I get home from work to continue working on work that I want to do!

7. The stuff that falls off sweet gum trees really hurts when you're wearing sandals and you get one stuck in the arch of your foot. Really.

8. I know now, thanks to Anna, that places like this exist, and they exist in small towns. And they are very inspiring.

9. Giggling at girl's night can make a long day ahead and a million important decisions seem so much less daunting. It's great to go out to events sometimes, but my favorite Wednesdays are the ones where we sit on the couch and just chat.

10. I really need to schedule blog entries, so that I don't get to Friday and realize I haven't been doing what I said I was going to do (blog more regularly!) Or forget the fun things I'm going to share. Or contradict myself when I say that I'm "organized."

I'm off to celebrate a good friend's graduation from ultrasound school tonight, and will hopefully get to visit that shop mentioned above tomorrow while I'm there! Also looking forward to Easter Sunday brunch in WashMo...

Happy Friday!

New Season, New Stuff

I caved and got a twitter account... hoping the viral nature (virality? viral-ness? aren't made up words more fun?) of social networking will get the word out that Clever Betty is up and running! Follow me @clever_betty (curse the user who took the name cleverbetty and never uses their account!)

And, you may have noticed the new header and tagline... I found myself trying to be cute as I sent an email to a friend the other day... and had one of those aha! moments. I shall deem you my new blog tagline.

Last but not least, I am more than a few chapters into a new book, that's right I said new folks... I finally finished the last one. I won't even mention the name of it since it obviously wasn't good; it only took me 7 whole months to read it.

Because I Like Even Numbers

I'm fairly certain that 2010 is going to be a great year. So I decided to jump on the bandwagon and write a real new year's resolution post. What better place to record your resolutions so you can look back at them (hopefully to never be lost, knock on wood) than a blog? This is a long list, as I like to dream big. Here it goes:

1. Starting with the cliche, I'm going to eat healthier in 2010. Last year Sean and I made a vow to not eat fast food, and while that worked (for the most part) we really didn't make much of an effort to eat healthy at home. The plan is to make fruits and veggies a bigger portion of each meal, lay off the carbs a bit. and actually cook meals.

2. Also cliche, I plan on sticking to my workout schedule. We've remedied the "I don't feel like going to the gym" situation by purchasing a treadmill (at a great deal!) instead of renewing our gym memberships in February. Same price, even more convenient. There's also weights, a pull-up bar, exercise ball, ab roller, and P90X videos involved, so the home gym is well on its way. We're training for the Undy 5000 again this year, and I hope to keep up at least half of the amount of running after the race, and continue going to pilates once a week.

3. Continue saving 25% of my net income. This has been a challenge since I started doing it last year, but I know that there are going to be a lot of major purchases in the next few years and I want to be prepared. Having been laid of in 2008, I definitely felt the "but I don't have any money!" freak out when I got the news- and that's one of the things that prompted me to start saving more.

4. I really want to make sure that I tell important people in my life that I love and appreciate them. Something I've always tried to do, whether subtly or direct, but it is so very easy to accidentally let it slide when my life gets busy. Without my friends and family though, I would not have the wonderful life that I do! I plan on making this a priority in 2010.

5. Become a better thrift shopper. And buy less stuff in general. I started the year off by organizing my entire apartment and weeding out things I haven't used in the past two years that I've lived there. If I need an outfit that I just can't put together from the things I already have in my closet, I plan to hit up the local thrift and consignment stores before heading to H&M. I want to be less reliant on material goods, and use the things that I already have or can find for free to recycle when I am making gifts, decorating or coming up with a costume.

6. Speaking of cleaning my apartment, I really want to stay organized and clean this year. This means compiling my lists in one place, recycling junk mail when I get it and doing my dishes right after each meal so they don't pile up (I don't have a dishwasher!)

7. I need to limit the amount of time I spend on my computer when I'm at home. Granted, I'll have to spend some to get the shop going, but I already sit at a computer for 8 hours a day, and my time at home can be much better spent by doing #'s 1, 2, 4, 6 (and upcoming #'s!) I mean really, I don't actually even care about seeing who has updated their facebook status or blog in the past five minutes, but it's become such a habit to check my regulars so frequently, that I have to put an end to it before it gets out of control. Those updates will still be there tomorrow!

8. I used to speed through books before I started college, sometimes more than one or two in a week. Currently I'm still working on a book that I think I started back in August. I don't expect to be back to multiples per week with all of the other things going on these days, but I'm not in college anymore (not since 2007!) and I don't have to read textbooks now- so I want to read more for fun in 2010.

9. This is a big one, so I guess I can sum it all up by saying I will take more time to enjoy life and better myself. The ways that I plan on doing this are to volunteer for an animal shelter, take a class (art maybe? or perhaps I can convince Sean to finally go take some dancing lessons,) learn to play the guitar I got for Christmas, and continue learning new sewing techniques for the benefit of my business and my personal wardrobe.

And finally...

10. Open the Clever Betty shop! I plan on doing so by the end of this month, so look forward to a grand opening post. I also would like to set a goal for the shop to be out of the red by mid 2010.

So there we go, folks... my top 10 in 2010. I plan on looking back at this post quite a bit throughout the year to remind myself.

Oh! And, I'd like to set a resolution for you. Become a more active reader.  Join me in my discussions and leave a comment here and there! I know you're out there reading- I use Google Analytics- so let me know you're interested in what I'm writing. Or tell me what you'd like to hear- I'm very open to suggestions.

Upcoming posts include a studio tour, recapping Sean's anniversary gift, inspiring music, and progress with the CB shop!

What are you resolving to do in 2010?
